One of the main reasons people travel to Borneo is to see orangutans in their natural habitat. However, there are plenty of other wildlife sightings to be had on the island. On land, visitors may have the opportunity to see Pygmy elephants, sun bears, and various species of monkeys. Underwater, swimming with turtles and even leopard sharks is a possibility.
Kinabatangan River
The Kinabatangan River is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Visitors have the chance to spot orangutans, proboscis monkeys, hornbills, and elephants in their natural habitat. From sunrise river cruises to night safaris, there are various boat trips available to increase the chances of wildlife sightings. Seeing a whole herd of Pygmy elephants, the smallest species of elephant in the world, is a major highlight.
Danum Valley
Danum Valley is one of the few places in the world where orangutans can be seen in their natural habitat. Various species of monkeys, including red leaf monkeys and tarsiers, can also be spotted swinging through the trees. Some lucky visitors may even catch a glimpse of an elephant or the rare Sumatran rhinoceros.
Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre
If you want to increase your chances of spotting an orangutan in Borneo, the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is the place to visit. This center rescues orangutans from the wild and provides them with ample space to roam freely before they are ready to be released back into their natural habitat.
Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary
Known for their distinctive potbellies and elongated noses, proboscis monkeys are some of the most unusual looking monkeys in the world. While they can be seen in the wild, visiting the sanctuary in Sepilok offers the opportunity to observe them up close.
Sun Bear Rehabilitation Centre
Despite their small size and seemingly sweet nature, sun bears can still be dangerous. The sun bears at the rehabilitation center have been rescued from individuals who have illegally caged and tried to domesticate them.
Pom Pom Island
Pom Pom Island, located in the Celebes Sea, is surrounded by sea turtles and starfish. Those interested in swimming with sea turtles should consider visiting this idyllic island instead of the more touristy turtle island.
Bako National Park
Bako National Park is a prime location for spotting proboscis monkeys, as well as macaques and red leaf monkeys. The park offers numerous hiking trails through its forested interior, providing panoramic views of sea stacks.
Sipadan Island
Sipadan Island is renowned as one of the world’s best diving sites. Divers may have the opportunity to encounter a variety of shark species, including leopard sharks, white-tip reef sharks, grey reef sharks, and scalloped hammerhead sharks. PADI certification is required to fully explore the vibrant underwater life here.
