How to spend a perfect day in Bruges

by admin

It is impossible not to find yourself enchanted by Bruges. Built around picturesque canals and home to perfectly preserved Gothic architecture, this is a city with character and charm in abundance. No matter which backstreet you wander down, you’ll be faced with traditional gingerbread houses and medieval architecture. It’s an easy city to get your bearings in, but nonetheless I thought I would share my itinerary for a perfect day in Bruges.

Bruges, Belgium

Start at Kruispoort gate
Encircled by medieval city walls, Bruges can be entered through one of four historic gates. Kruispoort gate is the most beautiful and well preserved of all four and it’s where our day in Bruges begins.

Coffee at Vero Caffè
Walk from Kruispoort gate in search of a decent cup of coffee. The walk will take you down cobblestone streets rarely frequented by tourists so you’ll get a glimpse into local life in Bruges. There is one specialty coffee shop that you can rely on for a flawless flat white and that’s Vero Caffè.

Admire The Burg
Fuelled on caffeine and ready to hit the day, we are heading straight to the busiest part of town because it’s still early so there will be less tourists around. In the heart of Bruges, the Burg is a perfectly preserved square overflowing with Gothic architecture. Make sure to visit the Basilica of the Holy Blood, home to the phial, which is said to contain the blood of Jesus.

Waffles for breakfast
It is totally acceptable to indulge in waffles for breakfast whilst in Belgium and we are taking every opportunity to do just that. The best in town can be found at Chez Albert which serves up the classic liege variety made up of brioche-like dough laced with chunks of caramelised sugar. Better still, Chez Albert is located in the Burg so you can enjoy your waffle whilst taking in the stunning architecture around you.

Climb to the top of Belfry of Bruges
Queues are long so the earlier you get to Belfry tower the better. Climb to the top for picturesque views of the townhouses interrupted by pretty canals.

Groenerei canal
Walk along the water from the Groenerei (Bruges’ prettiest canal) to Bonifacius Bridge. Much of the city’s charm can be found along its canals walking along the water’s edge and crossing ancient bridges.

Cruise along the canal
After admiring the canals on foot, it’s time to hop on a boat and float along the water passing under ancient bridges as you go. It’s a beautiful and leisurely way to while away an hour and give your feet a little break.

Brewery Tour
Family owned and one of few working breweries left in central Bruges, it would be rude to pass by Half Moon brewery without stopping in for a beer or two. Enjoy the pretty courtyard before venturing on a brewery tour to learn about how they have been brewing beer for centuries.

Stroll through Minnewater
Stroll from colourful and quaint Walpein Square heading in the direction of Minnewater which is easily Bruges’ prettiest park. Serene and peaceful, this park is surrounded by water and quintessential Bruges architecture.

That's Toast, Bruges

Lunch at That’s Toast
With its all day brunch menu, this trendy spot proves that Bruges is ahead of its time. Choose between sweet or savoury toast, favourites are the classic topped with avocado, grilled asparagus and eggs or the Croque Madame. Fret not non-carb eaters, there is more than toast on the menu.

Beer at Markt square
Head back to the pumping heart of the city to Markt square. Best enjoyed from above, I would recommend ascending the steps to the outdoor terrace at Duvelorium. With quintessential views of the old town square and a stellar selection of beers, it’s the perfect way to end your day.
